Description
LOCATION: Sutton Island, Cranberry Isles - Close to Acadia National Park
Arriving at North East Harbor, or Southwest Harbor Maine, you will board one of several available Cranberry Isle ferries for a short ride to Sutton Island. No cars are allowed on Sutton Island, nor is there a ferry to take them. The ferries are for people and supplies only. Tell the captain that you need to be dropped off at the Town Dock on Sutton Island and then prepare to be immersed in one of the best vacation opportunities possible in Maine. Sutton Island, the third largest of the Cranberry Islands, is a mile and a quarter long and a half a mile wide. The island has been a vacation spot for hundreds if not thousands of years. In pre-European days, Indians would come to the island in the summer season to fish and play. Since the Civil War, Sutton Island has been a vacation retreat for the several families that have owned property on the island throughout that period until now. It is a rare opportunity that a property on this exclusive, private island becomes available for rent. The Bowman Family, which has vacationed on the island since the 1930's, has offered this special property for rent this year. This cottage is private, far away, and yet so close to it all. The island has no road connection to the mainland or airstrip, and is therefore primarily accessed by ferries out of Southwest Harbor, Maine and Northeast Harbor, Maine. There is electricity and phone service to the island, so all the modern world conveniences are available, yet somehow, the feeling that you have been swept back in time is clearly evident the minute you step on the island. The kids in your group will love swimming in the ocean just a hundred or so feet in front of the cottage. The adults will enjoy sitting back and relaxing the way a vacation should allow you to. And... if you need some civilization, just call a ferry on the phone and ask them to swing by and pick you up. Within 15 minutes you can be in downtown Southwest Harbor or Northeast Harbor having dinner in a nice restaurant, or wandering through the shops. Within 20 minutes, you can be in Acadia National Park riding your bikes or downtown Bar Harbor if you are traveling by car. If you don't want to take a ferry, paddle ashore in a kayak, or zip into any destination you choose in one of our rental boats. The cottage is furnished with all the Maine charm you would expect on an island retreat such as this. Sea shells and sea glass mounted on driftwood and lobster buoys hanging from the ceiling may inspire an arts & craft project of your own. Downstairs is a large living room area with a fireplace for cool nights. A dining room and wonderfully equipped kitchen are at the back of the first level, and then two bedrooms, each with full sized beds, take up the rest of the lower level along with a full-sized tub/bath. The front bedroom faces the water and is a spectacular location for watching a sunrise from bed. Up a narrow spiral stair case are three more bedrooms. One bedroom is a full sized room, and the other two rooms are set up for children, each with a twin bed as well as lots of children’s books and games. You don't need to bring a thing to entertain your children, it is all right here. Another bathroom with shower completes the upstairs. The house is stocked with binoculars, and hundreds of books, mostly on the history of the area and of Maine. See if you can use the binoculars to spot the over 50 varieties of birds first tracked on the island back in the 1980's. Deer are often observed in the early mornings or early evenings in the open areas of the island. Watch soaring eagles and osprey as they dive for fish in front of the cottage - or watch the lobster and sailboats traveling by throughout the day. There is no need for a television at this property - the world traveling by in front of the cottage is far more interesting! A great cottage for two families of 4, or a larger family, or even a group of friends looking to get away and bond - The Sutton Island Cottage could be the site of the best vacation you will ever have.
