This former General Store (built in 1905) was renovated into its current state as a cottage in 1981. It is now considered one of the prime rental properties in Bayside and often books out completely for the summer with repeat renters.

As you enter the cottage on the first floor, there is an entry hall with coat closet as well as stairs to the second floor. The high ceilings are notable with their beaded pine panels. Heading further inside is the large living and dining room with an open kitchen that is defined by its island.

The living room is defined by the built in seating area with two 30x75 bunk mattresses that can be used for sleeping if needed, its a great place to relax.

The kitchen includes a dishwasher and all the tools necessary to make and serve a large meal. There is also a nicely appointed full bath off the kitchen with an antique claw foot tub with shower. Heading to the rear of the cottage through the screen door to the outside full-width deck with seating, a small table, and gas grill. The deck faces the ocean and offers views of all the Bayside activity.

Upstairs on the second floor are two bedrooms and a bath with stall shower and washer and dryer. The front bedroom has a full sized bed and a seating area for reading. The rear bedroom has a queen bed and faces Penobscot Bay and is surrounded by eleven windows . It includes a reading/socializing area and a desk. The second floor hall is open to sky-lights on the third floor.

Up the stairs to the third floor are two more bedrooms that are a mirror of each other, each with skylights, and two built in bunks, one twin size (39X75) and the other bunk size (30X75).

This is an excerpt derived from the April 2004 article in Down East Magazine about renting in Bayside. We revised it slightly to ensure every point was considered and highly recommend that everyone who plans to rent in Bayside considers this:

- Before booking a Maine summer rental in Bayside, take a moment to review your expectations. Decide if privacy is a concern, or if lumpy mattresses or steep stairs present problems for you, and say so up front. Do you mind the smell of mothballs on occasion? Are there young children in your party? Children have grown up in Bayside starting at all ages for over 100 years. However, you must understand that not all the cottages were designed with today's safety standards for children. Learn as much as you can about any cottage you are considering. Is it sunny and bright inside or shady and cool? Maine summer nights can be brisk but they can also be very hot. Is there a thermostat in the house, or is a wood stove the only source of warmth? Are there fans for hot nights? Don’t even think to expect an air conditioner. Renters are typically expected to supply their own towels and bedding; is there anything else you should bring?

- Once you have committed to a rental, remember to stay flexible. Bayside is not a resort with identical rooms and furniture chosen by committee; that is why you are here and not at some famous vacation hotel. Minor inconveniences may well be part of the package, but so be it. Choose wisely and then relax. You will probably remember them as part of the charm.
