Named after the famous book by John Le Carre, “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,” this retirement home of a former “cold warrior”/intelligence officer and his art educator wife sits on the tidal banks of the Weskeag River in South Thomaston. This newly updated and tastefully decorated home is perfect for guests who want both comfort and most importantly a private, woodsy  surrounding with views of the water, wildlife, local lobster boats, and the ebb and flow of the tides.

This very comfortable, 5 bedroom plus den/study home offers plenty of space and modern decor. The large living room has high wood ceilings, a stone fireplace, and a wall of glass windows - opening the interior to 180 degree views of the water and woods - along with an open modern kitchen and dining area. With two large living areas, adults can congregate upstairs while preparing meals or watching a movie, while kids can enjoy the huge downstairs playroom with their own TV/DVD player, full size ping pong and air hockey tables, and a games cabinet and table. This layout plus a kids bunk room with one bunk and two twin beds and a  separate room with a queen bed, a wrapround outdoor deck, and stairs providing riverside access for clamming or kayaking make this house a perfect base for a family vacation. Halls lined with bookshelves, a separate reading/TV room with deep comfortable chairs, built in benches on the deck and a screened-in gazebo outdoors make this home a reader’s delight as well.

The house also features access for those with limited mobility, being equipped with gently sloping ramps from the driveway onto the deck and into the house, and is set up to be easily navigated with hardwood floors, a large master suite, a wheelchair accessible bath and shower room. The elevator is no longer accessible to the lower level.  There is also a fenced side yard and deck gates that enable dog owners to give their pets access to secure outdoor space without fear of them wandering off on their own.

The whole house has recently had a complete renovation with all of the highest level of materials and furnishings used for your comfort and relaxation. Enjoy your mornings lounging on the wraparound deck, watching eagles dive for fish in the river or the lobster boats coming and going. Take day trips to neighboring towns Thomaston, Rockland, and Camden for shopping, museums, and restaurants. Spend an afternoon on Birch Point State Beach or take a short hike to the Owls Head lighthouse, both only minutes away. Enjoy a crab melt at the Keag (pronounced Gig) store or a lobster roll at Millers or McLoons, all local favorites. Or purchase live lobsters from world famous Atwood’s Lobster Company in Spruce Head and have your own waterside lobster bake.

Our stay was great with only a few hiccups. Our favorite feature was the game room. The kids adored it!

Working with the team was great - helpful, friendly, and professional. No problems whatsoever with the team.

Stay was enjoyable and favorite features were the dining/kitchen/living area, as well as the basement game room for separate group TV watching and games.

Amazing! They were so easy to communicate with and we had 0 issues.

We had a lovely stay, the house was as advertised and big and provided everything we needed. I wish we could swim directly from the home (we were spoiled with a lake last year) so that is now on our must haves. My favorite feature of the home was the downstairs rec area for the kids to enjoy (our week of weather was a bit rainy) and the bathroom in the master bedroom. And the lobster cooking stuff! And the view!

Thanks to everyone at On The Water in Maine for making our vacation at Inn From The Cold a success! We had a great time and everything at the Inn was lovely. We were very happy with the service we got when we called to deal with the shut-off valve leak near the washing machine and to have the lightbulb over the staircase replaced. Your staff handled the situation quickly and efficiently and the person you sent to deal with the problems was personable and efficient.

We light many things about the Inn From The Cold, but our favorite feature is the lovely view from the dining room area and the fact that three people can sleep on the first floor. Also, we love the bathroom showers. And as I have bad knees, the elevator is very much appreciated! Everyone I work with at On The Water has been friendly and efficient. I am always confident that they will be able to help me if I have any problems.

The team was readily available with help when we needed it(which wasn't often). The information we received before our trip was excellent. (One thing - we were given the code for the lock box, but were not told to hit the top button on the box after entering the code. Took us two days to figure out why we couldn't get it to work.) Instructions on how to work the remotes would be a good idea as would instructions on how the heater and fan work.

The property is beautiful! Wonderful view! The bathrooms are beautifully fitted! The kitchen was fully stocked, much better than expected. The living room was so comfortable, we spent a lot of time there. The central location makes a great starting point for day trips. In one direction is Boothbay Harbor and Pemiquid Point. In the other direction is Rockland, Rockport, Camden and even Bar Harbor! We really enjoyed the Kaeg Store - just five minutes from the home. Don't miss breakfast there!

Such a comfortable home in quiet, peaceful surroundings, it was the perfect location to relax and to use as a base to explore this beautiful part of Maine. The house was very clean and had everything we needed: spacious living room, large fireplace (including firewood), lots of light, nice kitchen, comfortable beds, and as a bonus, there were lots of games and books. With the help of a large lobster roll rating chart hidden in the front closet, we were able to find all the best lobster shacks in the area. From the living room we could see the lobster boats and kayakers float by. I would definitely come back and stay in the same house again.

Many thanks to Meg, who worked with me via email. It was my first time renting a Maine vacation house and she made it painless and fun, even! Inn from the Cold: We loved Inn From The Cold for the view, of course, but mostly for the excellent accommodations. The kitchen has everything we needed, including some nice strawberry jam that came in handy on our first day for toast! The bathrooms were perfect. The living room throws were most appreciated! Our contribution to the house was a new bottle of extra virgin olive oil. That's how much we loved our house, we are thinking of it as our own and hoping others will enjoy it as much as we did. The view, of course, and the open kitchen, dining room, family plan that makes use of the gorgeous view! Also, I really appreciated the features for limited mobility as I have bad knees. I am a huge spy book and movie fan - John LeCarre is my favorite author. I brought my own signed copy of one of his newer books to read during our stay. it was the perfect place.
